Critique and peer critique
We will be learning how to talk about works of art and also about each other's works of art. I'll show you how to do both. It's not that scary. Let's start by watching a short video about art critiques and the etiquette involved. The goal is to voice your opinion in a way that doesn't make you sound like a jerk, or that you're just saying that you like it. Let's watch.
And this video which was a little more interesting, but still helpful in what a critique should and should not look like.
4 Steps to an Art Critique
So let's talk about these 4 steps to a good, sound critique.
Describe: Describe the artwork and identify the subject matter or main focus. This is the easiest part that most people miss. Look at the work of art for several minutes without saying anything. What do you see? Talk about what elements and principles you see. What colors do you see? What is the focal point of the work?
Analyse: Analyse the elements and principles of art and design present in the work. You may have seen or noticed those elements and principles in the last step. Now look at them closer and see if they help add a feeling or meaning to the work? Do those elements or principles remind you of anything from your life?
Interpret: Deduce the message in the artwork. Try to find the meaning of the artwork. Sometimes knowing about the work makes this easier to see the meaning or representation. Sometimes you may need to ask the artist (student) what the meaning of their work is and how they were able to create/ show this in their work.
Judge: Assess the success of the artwork in its use of subject matter and elements and principles of art and design to deliver the intended message. This one is up to you. You get to judge the work of art. Do you like it/ dislike it? Why? Are the elements and principles working in this piece? Are the colors working in this piece? Was technique executed correctly or in a way that is consistent throughout the work?
Be descriptive here. If you hate it, tell us specifically why and back it up with art terms.
Critiques you'll be completing during these 9 weeks
You will be responsible for completing 2 critiques this cardmarking using the art posted on the Art Critique Board in the back of the room. The first critique is a basic critique. The second is a four step critique like described above. Take your time to do this right. You may need more paper than was provided on the worksheets. These are due at the end of the 9 weeks. They can be turned in to the turn in basket on my desk.
Peer Critique:
During your final project (and any other project that calls for a peer critique), you will complete a critique on another student's work and have your work critiqued by another student. You will use their critique to better your work. The peer critique looks similar to the four step critique, except this time the artist will be reading your words.
